WHAT IS LINUX?
Linux, commonly known as GNU/Linux, is a free, UNIX LIKE, operating system, originally developed for personal use, but today it runs on a variety of platforms including Alpha, SPARC, PowerPC, Crusoe, ARM, MC680x0 and many more. Linux is a multiuser, multitasking operating system who's technological legacy comes from mainframes and supercomputers for wich UNIX was developed more than 3 decades ago. Even now, Linux uses the POSIX standards to maintain maximum compatibility with other UNIX systems.

Linux plays well with other operating systems, including Apple, Microsoft and Novell.

It supports a wide range of software, including the X Window System, Emacs, TCP/IP (including SLIP/PPP/ISDN), and more. A Linux PC can easily serve as a fast subsitute for UNIX workstations.

Linux is freely available - it can be copied and redistributed without payments. Linux source code is available in the Internet for anyone who wants it.

Linux is also the birthplace of the Open Source methodology that, derived from the Free Software philosophy, has spawned a revolutionary proliferation of free software, from compilers to word processors and graphical interfaces (GUI's). Today, with a user base of at least 12 million users worldwide, Linux continues to grow exponentially as programmers, enthusiasts and end users exchange thoughts, implement ideas, contribute code and colaborate in the phenomenon called open source to produce the operating system known as Linux.
